Connie’s Legacy: Memory and Care

Our grandmother, known to everyone as Tia Connie, was the kind of person who made you feel welcome the moment you met her. She grew up in Portugal in extreme poverty and immigrated to Canada in 1967. At thirty-one years old, she arrived with no education and no knowledge of English.

After her husband passed away, she became a single mother raising five girls. Despite the challenges life threw at her, our mom and aunts remember a childhood full of warmth, laughter, and unconditional love, proof of how hard our grandmother worked to be a great mother.

Family was everything to her. She was happiest when the house was full, the table was set, and everyone was gathered together.

That spirit of community is why we are hosting a Movie Night Fundraiser, to bring people together just as she always did.

When we were in elementary school, our grandmother was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairments that eventually developed into dementia. As her condition worsened, we saw pieces of the woman who had built so much from nothing begin to fade away. She passed away a year ago and spent her last hours at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

We want to honour her legacy of love, resilience, and community by raising money for the Alzheimer Society as well as Cambridge Memorial Hospital, two organizations that help families like ours every day.

Your donation will help us keep her spirit alive and bring hope others. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference and is deeply appreciated.
