A Second Chance at Life— Adam Zinger

Adam was living his best life at 50, feeling invincible as he was soon going to celebrate his milestone birthday. A happy-go-lucky guy, Adam loves spending time with his then love and soon-to-be wife and family, and making the most of his weekends by pursuing his passion for vinyl records and classic cars.

But that all changed when he began feeling increasingly unwell. A routine check-up led to a terrifying diagnosis: Adam was in stage 4 liver failure. “What? My liver? I could die,” Adam remembers his reaction to the diagnosis very clearly.

“Being told I needed a new liver to live was beyond shocking. But what followed was a second chance at life— the expert care at Cambridge Memorial Hospital’s Regional Liver Health Program.

From his first visit, Adam could feel the support of CMH team. Adam says his physicians, Dr. Augustin Nguyen and Dr. M. Omair Sarfaraz never made him feel judged or treated him as just a number. “The nurses and physicians at CMH, especially nurses Rebecca and Tanya, became my family,” he says. They carefully guided him through blood transfusions, protein infusions, and treatments to help his liver heal.

Despite moments of hope when it seemed like recovery was possible, Adam’s condition worsened, and he needed a new liver to be alive. Adam highlights it was during this tough and ambiguous time that CMH’s compassionate care helped him navigate and find hope. “The Liver Clinic at CMH kept me alive while I waited for a transplant,” he reflects.

Adam received his new liver within a few months after. While this was great news for Adam and his family, he knew that the road to recovery takes time, patience and lots of support. He thanks the dedication of everyone at CMH for helping him through his healing journey as well.

Adam’s story is not just about medical care, but also about the importance of Community support. “I’m here today because a wonderful soul who signed their organ donor card,” he says. “Organ donation is life-changing, and it’s something everyone should consider.”

The care Adam received at CMH wouldn’t be possible without the generous donations that support the Hospital. CMH’s Regional Liver Health Program is made possible because of our donors and their commitment to local healthcare.

“If I have learned anything on this journey, it is that the support of strangers, people I didn’t know personally, saved my life.”
