Celebrating Volunteers: Meet Drew

If you’ve visited Cambridge Memorial Hospital, chances are you’ve been greeted by one of our ambassador volunteers—like Drew Black—always ready to help with a big, warm smile.

After retiring, Drew was looking for ways to give back to his Community. When he found an opportunity here at CMH, Drew joined as a volunteer during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It wasn’t as bad as people might think,” Drew recalls. “The training and support from staff and fellow volunteers made it easy to get started.”

Talking more about his role, Drew shares the secret behind the popular ambassador that you see at CMH when you enter the lobby. “A genuine smile is all it takes.”

Drew believes kindness makes all the difference.

“People don’t come to the Hospital because they want to be there. So, I try to help them feel relaxed and supported— even if just during our walk to their destination.”

He says the best part about volunteering at CMH is that he gets to meet new people and talk with them. “I can see that they genuinely appreciate our support, and it is very fulfilling.”

As someone who has been in the Cambridge Community for many years, Drew has deep ties to CMH—he was first hospitalized here in 1965 after an industrial accident. His children were also born here, at CMH.

“CMH has changed a lot over the years,” he says, “but one thing that has been consistent is the excellent patient care and staff.”

As a monthly donor, Drew shares why he decided to support the Community Hospital, “What I really appreciate about donating to CMH is that every dollar goes directly to new equipment.  I believe that is an outstanding use of the funds as they directly support the patient and the medical staff.”

Today, Drew continues to serve as an ambassador volunteer, and Foundation monthly donor. He was also on the Volunteer Association board in the past.

You can support your local Hospital too.
